Divine Dough: Filipino baker’s Holy Week breads raise the bar for religious art

Step aside, Grilled Cheesus — a baker’s immaculate religious art imprinted onto artisan breads is making the rounds in honor of Holy Week.

Marlo Pimentel Lidot, who runs the page Artisan Bread Basket Online Store, shared photos of his intricately done “Holy Week Breads.”

His Lent-themed creations feature the images of The Last Supper and Christ’s passion in his thorned crown.

Lidot, who is based in Cebu and previously worked as a commis baker, is known for the creative decorations on his baked goods such as rye, sourdough, and multi-grain breads. He accepts commissioned portraits for his breads and has previously done images of former President Rodrigo Duterte and former Vice President Leni Robredo.

Lidot began his business at the height of pandemic lockdowns in 2020.

His works of art certainly beats other questionable “toast images” that claim to feature the faces of Jesus or the Virgin Mary.
