Rep. Alvarez and weed advocates munch on brownies in decriminalization meeting; staff clarifies they’re from bakery chain

Former drug war defender-turned-marijuana crusader Pantaleon Alvarez, now the 1st District representative of Davao Del Norte, celebrated an end to a productive meeting with weed advocates to decriminalize marijuana by getting baked… goods, that is.

A photo posted online showed him and other stakeholders happily feasting on brownies — which his team made sure to clarify came from local bakery chain Goldilocks, and not the spacey kind. The meeting attendees included doctors, senior citizens, and artists.

ICYMI, Alvarez has fashioned himself as a pro-marijuana decriminalization advocate after filing HB 6783 in the 19th Congress, which seeks to remove marijuana and any form or derivative of the substance from the list of dangerous drugs and substances under existing laws such as the Dangerous Drug Act of 2002 or RA 9165.

This is quite the turnabout from his previous stance when he was allied with the previous Duterte administration as House Speaker, where he defended the president’s drug war. In 2021, he later spoke out and said that the anti-drug campaign “could have been better handled.”

A town in Cebu apparently planted trees within potholes on the road, to people’s confusion
While clearly well-intentioned, the idea of plants just perched in the middle of the road tickled people’s funny bones.
