Fil-Am star Nico Santos is set to star in third ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film

If you love seeing Filipinos represented on the big screen in Hollywood, then here’s some good news for you: Fil-Am star Nico Santos, of Superstore and Crazy Rich Asians fame, is set to star in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!

Director James Gunn himself announced Santos’ casting in the final installment of the Guardians trilogy, which wrapped up production this month.

“Yes @nicosantos is in #GotGVol3. Hilarious & talented & sweet guy who, like me, got engaged during Vol. 3 because magic & love were in the air,” Gunn wrote while posting snaps of himself hanging out with the comedy star.

While Santos’ character in the upcoming film has yet to be announced, he confirmed his involvement in Guardians on Twitter.

“Punch me! I mean pinch me,” he wrote on Twitter.

Landing Guardians is another feather in Santos’ cap, who broke through for his portrayal of undocumented Filipino immigrant Mateo Liwanag in the NBC comedy Superstore, one of the first Filipino main characters on a major American network TV show.

Santos also starred in the blockbuster film Crazy Rich Asians as Oliver T’Sien.

In an interview, Santos told The Filipino Channel that he was the one who gave his Superstore character his “unmistakably Filipino last name.”

“He was already named Mateo and so Justin Spitzer, the creator of the show, was like, ‘Do we need to tweak the name?’ I was like, ‘We have a lot of Spanish names in our culture because of our history of colonization. But we can change the rest of his name if you’d like to something that’s unmistakably Filipino.’ And so I actually chose the name,” he said.

The actor grew up in Manila and moved to Oregon with his family when he was 16.

The third Guardians film is slated for a May release next year.
