Giant marlin and oil fish are stars at 13th Siargao International Game Fishing Tournament
A 41-kg blue marlin and a 30.2-kg oil fish (malapeƱa) were among the largest catch at the 13th Siargao International Game Fishing Tournament, which ran from April 20 until today in the town of Pilar in Siargao Island.
Santiago Gonzales of Pilar caught the 41-kg blue marlin and emerged as the champion of the Biggest Billfish Category, taking home a prize of PHP100,000 (US$1789.58). Weebert Keefee of Surigao City won second place with a 38.4-kg sail fish, while Jesus Manubag won third place with a catch of 19.7 kg.
Meanwhile, Dave Sharpee won the Others Category after catching a 30.2-kg oil fish, while Richard Sharpee came in second place with a 27.4-kg oil fish.
Julio Castro of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental came in third with a 7.6-kg barla.
At least 31 anglers from the Philippines and around the world joined the competition, which was relaunched for the first time after 3 years of cancellation due to the pandemic as part of the town’s efforts to boost the recovery of its tourism industry.
