Davao jail opens library for inmates

Just because they’re in jail doesn’t mean inmates can’t seek to improve their lives.

A jail facility in the Davao region recently opened a library where inmates can read and study — the first of its kind in the region.

The Social Entrepreneurship Technology and Business Institute (SETBI) College, which administers the College Education Behind Bars project that allows inmates to pursue higher education while serving time, funded the construction of the library.

Authorities said that the library would serve inmates enrolled with SETBI as well as the government’s alternative learning system (ALS), and they they would be provided with their own borrowers’ cards.

Eight persons deprived of liberty (PDL) are enrolled in the SETBI program, while 80 inmates are under the ALS.

The library managed to stack the library shelves with books through donations made on social media and it will soon have e-books available for its students as well.
