Fans shocked after Dolly de Leon’s Oscar snub

Despite snagging key precursor award nominations, breakthrough Filipino actor Dolly de Leon was not included in the list of Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

De Leon was considered a hot contender for the nomination after her stunning turn as the yacht toilet cleaner Abigail in Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness earned raves and critical acclaim.

The actress snagged the Best Supporting Actress trophy from Sweden’s Guldbagge Awards, and Los Angeles Film Critics Awards’ Best Supporting Performer Award, which she shares with Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Ke Huy Quan. She received nods for the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, whose nominations are widely considered to place one in the running for an Oscar.

The Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress include Angela Bassett, (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Hong Chau, (The Whale), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Meanwhile, Triangle of Sadness has garnered a Best Picture bid and a Best Director nomination for Östlund.

The news of the Oscar snub had fans shocked, who believed that de Leon deserved to be on the list.

“I’m still writing Dolly de Leon on my ballot,” English filmmaker Edgar Wright tweeted.

Yet there were those that thanked de Leon for representing the Filipino community in Hollywood and for opening doors for other actors and talents to make their mark.

“Not sure if I ever thought having a Filipino performer even in the Oscar conversation would happen in my lifetime. Thank you so much, Dolly de Leon, for everything you have done to bring our community in Hollywood to the forefront. It’s just the beginning,” PR and awards director Ryan Aguirre wrote.

“Dolly de Leon may not have secured an Oscar nomination but her awards run opened up Hollywood’s willfully ignorant eyes to the untapped artistic potential of the Filipino community. #Oscars2023,” writer Anthony Ocampo said.
